Due to the slow job market I have been searching diligently for a job since the bar ended to no avail. So, I am turning to a relatively new development in the legal job market: the contract attorney.
To get a job as a temporary or contract attorney you can either find direct listings yourself or, more commonly, go through an agency. If you go through an agency you are their employee and can get health benefits and time off through them. The jobs you get tend to have short notice and a varying duration. For instance, I was told that you could get called for a job that starts tomorrow. Also, a job could be as short as a week or could last as long as a year. These jobs don't have the job security of a normal position. Also, they tend to be dull tasks like reviewing documents on a computer screen.
I have applied with two agencies now. I have an interview with one of the agencies tomorrow. This is in hopes of getting a temporary job that they advertised. The job would last for 1 year and be 40 hours a week. It's in Midtown Manhattan at a corporate office. The bonus to this job is that the corporation is using the temporary position as a recruiting tool, meaning that it could end in a job.
I really hope I get it. It would make me very, very happy to be employed. Wish me luck. :)
