It has almost become a ritual for me. Every May, Chuck Palahniuk releases a new novel and goes on tour. Every May, I go see him and get my stuff signed. Last night was Palahniuk's New York City event, held at the Cooper Union, and I was there.
I was a VIP again, meaning I was one of the 100 people who got to meet Palahniuk and have their stuff signed (VIP just means that I was one of the first to buy a ticket). With my ticket, I also got a free copy of the new book, Tell-All.
Here I am with Palahniuk:
Here's the silly picture:
Here's Palahniuk on stage:
The blow up Oscars and turkeys were part of a contest he did. People had to blow up the Oscars as fast as they could. The fastest won a blow-up turkey. I did not compete. I still have my blow-up penguin from last year and I never know what the heck to do with it. The turkeys were pretty awesome though.
Finally, here are pictures of what he signed in my books. Here is my old copy of Lullaby, which I brought along from home:
Here is Tell-All:
He wrote that message because I walked up, being the nerd I am, and said, "This is like two for the price of one! I get to see you and I am at the famous Cooper Union!" I have no idea if he knew what I was talking about.
For those of you who also don't know what I am talking about, the Great Hall, in the basement of the Cooper Union, was the site of one of Abraham Lincoln's most famous speeches. In fact, the speech is now known as "The Cooper Union Speech." I took a picture of the marble statue and sign outside of the Great Hall:
If you can't read the famous quotation, obviously from that speech, it states:

Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.
I had a lot of fun at the event. I wish that I had the mental recall to tell some of the jokes that Palahniuk told or a great answer he gave to an interview question. However, if I tried to recreate them here, I would be paraphrasing and I fear that my retelling would not do him justice. If he is coming your way, go see him. Even if you aren't a huge fan of his books, he is always entertaining to see.
