Yesterday, we went with friends to Jones Beach on Long Island. We had a blast. I don't think I had ever been on a beach like it before. The main beach season starts on Memorial Day but there were still tons of people there. The beach itself is 6.5 miles long and has 23,000 parking spots. It is just crazy big. There were people everywhere and you could not see an end to the beach in either direction.
Here is Brian when we arrived at the beach. Just to let you know: most of his pasty-white skin was saved from sunburn:
He immediately buried himself in the sand:
Brian and Bobby played in the waves:
I share that picture simply because I want to remember the high pitched scream that came from Brian when he was getting hit by the waves. The water was ice cold.
Here are Christina and Rahela by the epic sand castle we built:
The girls in the group first attempted to build a castle and it looked like a cross between a volcano and a dilapidated wedding cake (not pictured; you don't want to see it). The boys seemed insulted by our effort and proceeded to take charge. With a little direction, we ended up with a medieval fortress, colosseum, monk sanctuary, moat and a bridge.
The pictures just don't do our sand castle justice. Here's part of the group working on it:
This is the epic entryway that Brian, Sabina and I all focused on. I'm proud of my little square buildings and stairs:
Bobby informed me that I was building ziggurats. I had no idea that there was a word for those structures. You learn something new every day.
Here's my requisite picture of the ocean:
But what the heck is this thing? I saw it slowly shuffling down toward the water. It looks prehistoric:
I kept my distance.
We had an awesome time at the beach. It was a perfect, sunny day and I am sure that this is going to be one of my all-time favorite New York memories! Thanks for driving us, Sabina!
UPDATE: Nicole thinks it's a horseshoe crab. After extensive Googling, I believe her to be correct. Thanks, Nicole!

She's a NatGeo junky, so I'd go with it.
Safe travels home :)
